GUIDANCE FROM A MATURE BELIEVER

This Is What Fellowship Is All About  •  1 John 1:5–2:12

Come Into the Light

What Real Fellowship With God Looks Like, and Why You Can’t Walk It Alone

Have you ever made your way through the house in the middle of the night without flipping on a switch? You know where everything is. You’ve made that trip a hundred times. Then your shin finds the coffee table.

A lot of us live our spiritual lives the same way. We feel sure we know the path, right up until the darkness proves us wrong.

When the Lights Go Down

Anyone who has worked night shift in a hospital knows how different the same hallway feels at 3 a.m. The floor you walk with ease at noon becomes a place where you need help to see. So, you carry a penlight. You keep a light on at the nurses’ station. You learn quickly that you depend on the light far more than you realized.

This week in our series, Guidance From a Mature Believer, we’re walking through 1 John 1:5–2:12. The apostle John has a lot to say about light, darkness, and what it truly means to share your life with God. He calls it fellowship. And it runs far deeper than coffee and cake in the church fellowship hall (though I’ll never say no to either).

A Message Straight From Jesus

By the time John wrote this letter, he was an old man. He had outlived the other apostles. False teachers had slipped into the churches, spreading ideas that sounded spiritual but pulled people away from the truth. So, John did what a mature believer does. He went straight back to the Source.

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him.”

1 John 1:5 (CSB)

Look at that phrase, we have heard from him. John leaned against Jesus at the Last Supper. He stood at the foot of the cross. He ran to the empty tomb. He is handing us what he heard with his own ears. When a hundred voices compete for your attention, eyewitness testimony like that is worth holding tight.

God Is Light, and All Light Depends on Him

God is light. No shadows. No hidden corners. No mixed motives. John says there is absolutely no darkness in Him. Every good thing that shines in your life, every bit of truth, every kindness, every ounce of hope, traces straight back to Him.

The moon has no light of its own. It glows only because it faces the sun. You and I are the same way. We shine when we’re turned toward Him.

“I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12 (CSB)

So What Is Fellowship, Anyway?

Fellowship with God means sharing your life with Him. All of it. Your Monday mornings and your Saturday nights. Your checkbook, your calendar, your thought life, and yes, that grudge you’ve been nursing for years.

Real fellowship opens every room of the house and says, “Lord, come on in.” Here’s the catch, friend. You can’t invite the Light inside and keep the lights off.

Three Lies That Keep Us in the Dark

John names three misconceptions the false teachers were spreading. Truth be told, every one of them is still making the rounds today.

Lie #1: “I can walk with God and still live in darkness.”

“If we say, “We have fellowship with him,” and yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth.”

1 John 1:6 (CSB)

John doesn’t soften this one. No one can claim to be a Christian and keep living in evil and immorality. We can’t love God and court sin at the same time. Think about that word, court. It means keeping something close, flirting with it, making room for it. Sin is a suitor that never once has your best interest at heart.

Lie #2: “I’m really not that bad.”

“If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

1 John 1:8 (CSB)

This lie says people aren’t truly sinful at heart. We grade ourselves on a curve. Compared to the neighbor down the road, we look pretty good. But God doesn’t grade on a curve.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Romans 3:23 (CSB)

Lie #3: “I can make myself right with God.”

“If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

1 John 1:10 (CSB)

This lie tells us we can clean ourselves up, try harder, and earn our way to righteousness. In nursing, we learn early that you can’t treat what a patient refuses to admit. The person who insists nothing is wrong won’t take the medicine. Spiritually, it works the same way. The cure begins with an honest diagnosis. And oh, what a cure God offers.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9 (CSB)

The Blood That Makes Us Clean

“If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

1 John 1:7 (CSB)

In Old Testament times, a believer who sinned brought an animal to the priest. Leviticus 4 describes the ceremony. The worshiper laid a hand on the animal’s head, symbolically transferring the sin onto it. Then the animal was sacrificed. It died in the sinner’s place, paying the price and allowing that person to keep living in God’s favor.

Jesus did not die for His own sins. He had none. Instead, through a holy exchange, He died for the sins of the whole world.

“He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 (CSB)

When you commit your life to Christ and identify yourself with Him, His death becomes your death. He has paid the penalty for your sin, and His blood has made you clean. And the story keeps going. Just as Christ rose from the grave, you rise to a brand-new life of fellowship with Him.

“Therefore, we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.”

Romans 6:4 (CSB)

Walk With God, One Step at a Time

Notice how often John uses the word walk. Walking is daily. Walking is ordinary. You don’t walk a mile in one giant leap. You take one step, then another, then another.

“The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.”

1 John 2:6 (CSB)

When you walk with God, the darkness around you loses its power to frighten you. David knew that.

“The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—whom should I dread?”

Psalm 27:1 (CSB)

Stop Trying to Make God Fit

Here’s where many of us get tripped up. We try to shape God so He fits neatly into our lives. A Sunday-morning God. A spare-tire God we pull out when something goes flat. We leave the room for Him that’s left over after everything else is arranged.

The apostle Paul, one of the greatest Christians who ever lived, admitted he couldn’t get it right on his own.

“For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it.”

Romans 7:18 (CSB)

“What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Romans 7:24–25 (CSB)

God was never meant to fit inside your life. Your life is meant to fit inside His. When you hand Him the blueprint, He builds something far better than you could have drawn yourself.

You Were Never Meant to Walk Alone

Go back to 1 John 1:7 for a moment. When we walk in the light, John says, we have fellowship with one another. Fellowship with God and fellowship with His people go hand in hand.

“The one who loves his brother or sister remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.”

1 John 2:10 (CSB)

No nurse works a floor alone. We have a charge nurse. We double-check each other on high-risk medications. We cover each other’s patients when someone gets pulled into an emergency. Every one of those habits keeps people safe.

The body of Christ works the same way. When you join a group of other believers, you help each other along your walk with Christ. You pray for one another. You notice when someone is drifting. You carry the light when a brother or sister’s flashlight is running low.

“Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.”

John 15:4–5 (CSB)

“And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:24–25 (CSB)

Stepping Into the Light

John closes this section of his letter with words every tired heart needs to hear.

“I am writing to you, little children, since your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.”

1 John 2:12 (CSB)

Forgiven. On account of His name. Your record has been cleared by Jesus Christ, the righteous One who stands as your advocate with the Father.

So here is my gentle nudge. Stop stumbling through the dark. Stop pretending the coffee table isn’t there. Turn toward the Light, tell Him the truth, receive His cleansing, and then walk it out alongside people who love Jesus too. That is what fellowship is all about.

Your Plan of Action

Put this week’s message into practice with these six steps.

Step

What to Do This Week

1. Turn on the light

Read 1 John 1:5–2:12 each morning this week. Ask God to show you one thing in the passage that speaks directly to you, and write it down.

2. Take an honest inventory

Set aside fifteen quiet minutes. Ask the Lord to shine His light into every room of your life. Confess what He shows you, using 1 John 1:9 as your promise.

3. Break up with the sin you’ve been courting

Name the one habit, relationship, or thought pattern you keep close. Decide on one practical step to cut it off, and tell a trusted believer about it.

4. Hand God the whole calendar

Write down one area where you’ve tried to make God fit around your life. Pray over it and give Him the first place there.

5. Find your people

Join a small group, Sunday school class, or Bible study this month. If none fits, invite two believers to meet with you over coffee and Scripture.

6. Carry the light with you

Memorize Psalm 27:1. Say it out loud when fear or temptation creeps in.

A Prayer for This Week

Lord, You are light, and there is no darkness in You at all. Shine into every room of my life. Show me what I’ve been hiding, and give me the courage to confess it. Thank You for the blood of Jesus that cleanses me from all sin. Help me walk with You every day, and lead me to brothers and sisters who will walk with me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
