Standing Firm When Truth Gets Twisted · The Book of Jude

"But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life."

Every so often, a confident voice shows up promising the one thing the rest of us apparently missed — a hidden pattern, an old manuscript, a fresh "revelation" that finally unlocks what God really meant all along. It sounds impressive. It sounds exclusive. And to someone who has never been taught to test what they hear against Scripture, it can sound like exactly the kind of secret knowledge that would finally make faith make sense.

That impulse is not new. A half-brother of Jesus named Jude watched it happen in real time, inside real churches, among people he loved. He sat down to write a warm letter about the salvation they all shared. Then urgency changed his plans. What he left behind is one short chapter — twenty-five verses — but it still reads like an alarm bell for anyone who wants a faith built on something that will actually hold when the ground starts shaking.

A Short, Urgent Letter

Jude introduces himself simply, as a servant of Jesus Christ. He had planned to write about the salvation believers share in common. Instead, he found it necessary to sound an alarm, because certain people had slipped into the church, twisting God's grace into an excuse for sensuality and quietly denying Jesus as Master and Lord.

"Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all."

Notice what Jude does not say. He doesn't tell believers to invent a new faith or discover a better one. He tells them to contend for the faith already delivered — a faith with content, history, and a settled foundation. That single word, delivered, matters. What you believe was handed to you. It didn't originate with you, and it isn't yours to reshape.

Secondhand Secrets: How False Teachers Sell Fake Authority

False teachers rarely announce themselves as false. They present themselves as insiders — people who have found a deeper layer of truth that the ordinary believer, with an ordinary Bible, could never reach on their own. Their authority depends on mystery. If their "knowledge" of God could be checked against Scripture by anyone with a Bible and a little patience, it would lose its power. So it stays vague, spiritual-sounding, and just out of reach.

Here's the irony worth sitting with: God's nature really is beyond full human understanding. His ways are higher than ours, and no one fully comprehends Him. But that truth is exactly why the false teacher's pitch is so dangerous — it borrows something real (God is mysterious) and twists it into something false (God is unknowable apart from a special guide). Scripture never says that. It says the opposite.

God Has Already Spoken

In His grace, God chose to reveal Himself. He did not leave His people to guess. He gave prophets, gave His Son, gave a written Word that any believer can open, read, and trust. Faith grounded in God's truth doesn't chase mystical experiences or secret formulas — it does the steady, unglamorous work of learning what God has already made plain.

That's the real dividing line in Jude's letter. Those who refuse to learn sound doctrine are the ones left exposed to whatever comes along sounding spiritual enough. Those who truly have faith show it — not by claiming secret access, but by a deep reverence for God and a sincere desire to live according to the principles of His revealed Word.

Cracks in the Foundation

This is not a new strategy. Go back to the very beginning, to a garden, to a question asked in the dark: "Did God really say...?" Satan's oldest tactic was never a bold denial of truth. It was a small twist — just enough distortion to plant doubt, just enough half-truth to sound reasonable. Deception rarely announces itself as a lie. It shows up wearing truth's clothes.

That's why your foundation matters so much. You are shaped by whatever you build your life on. If that foundation is secure in Christ — in His finished work, His revealed Word, His unchanging character — it can absorb the twisting and the pressure without cracking. If it's built on shifting opinions, secondhand certainty, or whatever feels most convincing this week, it won't hold when the pressure comes.

Too Much Information, Too Little Truth

We live in an age that has solved the problem of access to information and created a brand-new problem in its place: an overabundance of information that makes deception easier, not harder. When everyone can publish everything, volume starts to look like credibility. Wisdom isn't found in consuming more. It's found in testing what you consume against what God has already revealed.

That's also the right lens for biblical eschatology — the study of the end times. Scripture doesn't hand us a countdown clock or a checklist of predictions to decode. It hands us ethics: how to live wisely, faithfully, and expectantly while we wait. The goal was never to satisfy curiosity about when. The goal is to shape how we live right now.

Scoffers and the Snowball Effect

"In the end time there will come scoffers, propelled by their own ungodly desires." ... "These people create divisions and are worldly, not having the Spirit."

Jude warned that scoffers would come — people who mock what they refuse to understand, live in every evil way imaginable, and create diversion after diversion to pull believers off course. Jesus described the same pattern to His disciples on the Mount of Olives, warning that false messiahs, wars, betrayal, and lawlessness would multiply as history moves toward His return.

"Because lawlessness will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved."

Think of it like a snowball rolling downhill — evil and diversion picking up size and speed the closer we get to the end. You will be exposed to it. Everyone will. The question was never whether the pressure would come. The question is whether you'll still be standing, grounded and faithful, when it arrives. Jesus' answer is not "figure everything out." It's "endure to the end, and you will be saved."

Staying Grounded in the Love of God

So how do you actually stand firm while the pressure builds? Jude doesn't leave that vague. He gives a short, practical list: build yourselves up in your most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and keep yourselves in the love of God while you wait expectantly for what Christ has promised.

"Have mercy on those who waver; save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh."

Notice that staying grounded isn't only a private project. Jude calls believers to have mercy on people who struggle with their faith — to reach toward those dangling over the fire and pull them back, even while staying vigilant about what could defile them in the process. Remaining grounded and showing mercy aren't in tension. They're partners.

Jesus put the same truth even more simply the night before He died: apart from Him, we can do nothing. Build up in faith, in prayer, in expectation — but build it all connected to the Vine, because that connection is where the strength actually comes from.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me."

Held by Grace, Not by Your Own Strength

Here is the mercy underneath everything Jude has said: none of this depends on you being strong enough to hold yourself up. It depends on the One who is. Rely on grace and transformation from Jesus, and He makes you able to stand strong when the snowball is heading straight for you.

"Now to him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of his glory, without blemish and with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time, now and forever. Amen."

Remember Jesus' sacrifice for you every time you feel unsteady. Find your joy there — in the new life He gives, not in how well you're managing to keep it together. Give Him glory daily, adhere to His authority above every competing voice, and value His presence and His teaching above anything the culture is currently selling as wisdom.

Who Is Jesus to You?

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together."

That is who holds your foundation together — not a secret, not a scoffer, not an algorithm, not even your own effort. Him. So let this land somewhere personal before you move on with your week:

• Have you made Jesus the Lord of your life and Savior for eternity?

• Are you becoming more like Him by spending time with Him?

• Have you become a messenger of the good news about Him?

• Is your life built around the hope of His promises?

  
  

Conclusion: Standing When Everything Else Shifts

Jude wrote a short letter because the moment demanded urgency, not length. The corruption of truth doesn't usually arrive with a warning label. It arrives sounding reasonable, sounding spiritual, sounding like something you'd be foolish to ignore. The only real defense is a foundation that was never yours to build in the first place — the faith delivered to the saints, the Word God chose to reveal, the grace of Jesus Christ who is able to keep you from stumbling.

The snowball is still rolling. It will keep gathering size until the day Christ returns. But you were never asked to stop it. You were asked to stand — grounded in the love of God, held by grace, and looking forward with expectant hope to the mercy that is already on its way.

Guard one hour from information overload — silence the feed and sit with God's Word instead.	Reach out with mercy to someone whose faith is wavering. Don't lecture. Listen, then point them to Christ.	Memorize Jude 24–25 as a daily reminder of who keeps you standing.	Live as a messenger of the good news, not a collector of secret answers.
Thank God that His truth doesn't depend on your having it all figured out.	Write down one way you saw God's grace keep you from stumbling this week.	Revisit Colossians 1:15–17 and let it reshape how big Jesus is in your daily thinking.	Build your hope on His promises, not on the noise of the moment.
